Revoting for this weekend's book club meeting! Yes, we will finally have one! Just have to make sure it doesn't conflict with that racing carnival that most of us are playing instruments at...yeah...

I vote sunday. That way, we don't have to worry about any conflicts. Plus, it'll be a good way to unwind.

I voted for Sunday, but I think my husband and I will be celebrating our wedding anniversary that day. I switch my vote to Saturday at 3pm.

What with the recalibrating of votes =D , we'll be meeting Saturday (yikes! today!) at 3pm.
Here are our topics:
(1) Bilbo chides himself for the business with the Arkenstone: "there was a battle, in spite of all your efforts to buy peace and quiet". Was his theft of the Arkenstone and delivery of it to the forces opposed to Thorin really in vain?
(2) We are told how, during Bilbo's unconsciousness at the end of the battle, not just the Eagles but also Beorn in bear-form showed up to save the day. We often think of such last-minute helpers as a deus ex machina, but the important question is: Does their intervention here work for the story in a satisfying and believable way?
(3) This chapter confronts us with the aftereffects of war, foremost among them the pain of loss and death. In Thorin's death we have a window on dwarven beliefs about an afterlife, as well as a glimpse of burial customs. What do we learn from Thorin's death?
(4) Even with Gandalf (and for a ways Beorn) escorting him back home, we are told that Bilbo still faced "hardships and adventures" on the way home. But the Quest of Erebor has already reached its climax, so these minor encounters are left untold. What do you think they might have been?
