re: LMB Book Club, The Hobbit Ch. 7: Queer Lodgings

We continue this week with a chapter less of adventure and peril - and more of wonder and mystery that is scarce summed up in the title of "Queer Lodgings"! So let's discuss:

(1) Beorn. Who is this "skin-changer" whose brusque impatience gives way to hospitality which gives way to friendship - only after he has personally confirmed the truth of Gandalf's story? What's the deal with the bee-pastures and the animal servants and the Carrock and, and...

(2) Gandalf's subtlety shows in his plan for introducing the dwarves to Beorn two by two. How does this compare to the way he introduced them to Bilbo back in chapter 1?

(3) What is the meaning of the imagery of the wind in the dwarves' song in Beorn's hall?

(4) At last Gandalf departs the party for good (or for a longer while than during the Trolls adventure anyway). Why now? Why thus? What's the purpose of this departure?

Music: Anything for the Wind song of the dwarves?

Silmarillion: The section "Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age" has some discussion of Mirkwood and its origins as Greenwood the Great, and of Sauron settling there as The Necromancer, and of the White Council and Gandalf's ventures into Dol Guldur. We shall of course see more of Mirkwood in the next chapter, but it is here that we first see it creeping up on the party...Seriously, if woods could creep up on you, Mirkwood would!

re: LMB Book Club, The Hobbit Ch. 7: Queer Lodgings

The rhythm of the Dwarves' "Wind Song" looked like a march to me, so I tried it with a number of them. I think it fits nicely with "Brian Boru's March." Here's the version I suggest for today's meeting.

This version was originally written with three lutes, so if we don't have drums and theorbo, we can still play it.

See you then,
