re: Bilbo's Last Song

I was going over this book list

https://www.goodreads.com/series/58083-middle-earth-universe

and found an interesting little book called, Bilbo's Last Song.

Has anyone read this?

I bought it as a thank you gift for a Tolkien-loving friend, but didn't read the whole thing before I gave it to her. It's only short though. Really sweet illustrations :)

re: Bilbo's Last Song

Yes, I've owned a copy of the tiny book for some time. It includes Tolkien's text accompanied by drawings by Pauline Baynes, who also illustrated Tolkien's 'Farmer Giles of Ham' and 'The Adventures of Tom Bombadil', as well as C.S. Lewis' 'Chronicles of Narnia' series. I owned a map of Middle-earth poster with her drawings back in the '70s when I was a teenager. Alas, it is now lost to the ages.

Tolkien's poem, "Bilbo's Last Song", was set to music and recorded by composer Donald Swann. It was included in his book of sheet music 'The Road Goes Ever On', which I also own. You can hear Swann sing and accompany himself on piano here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xp6nmOjqXAo (Swann wass quite mistaken about Tolkien's "Danish/Viking extraction".) I sang this a capella at my grandmother's memorial service in 2009. While she did not quite match the Old Took or Mister Bilbo, she lived to be 97!

The same text was beautifully set by composer Stephen Oliver for 'The Lord of the Rings' BBC radio dramatization. You may hear it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xO4aaiftLuA

I don't think I have heard these songs before, they are really lovely! Thank you for sharing the links! :)

You're very welcome, ma'am. Being a longtime fan of Professor Tolkien's works, predating even the publication of 'The Silmarillion', one tends to pick things up along the way. wink

re: Bilbo's Last Song

I have missed most of the older things, we didn't have much fantasy related things where I grew up :) Of Tolkien we only had The Hobbit and LotR (in a terrible translation), and a bit later a radio drama and a CD with music inspired by Middle Earth, but no songs with lyrics sadly. Internet wasn't really around so we couldn't find things from other countries, but it's really cool all the things you can find online nowadays :)
