Elondhil has sought independence and adventure since his father made it clear to him that his brother, Cuthrek, would be running things. When Father, on his death bed, confirmed Cuthrek’s primacy, Elondhil left. Spending several years moving from place to place in Gondor, Elondhil picked the wrong soldier to fleece. Fleeing north, he decided to visit the family farm. Cuthrek complained mightily about Elondhil’s absence and asked him to stay and protect the family against the threat of orcs which had arisen. The night the beasts reached their farm, Elondhil, Cuthrek, and Kiowyn fought as well as they could, but there were too many. As the three of them gave chase to two of the retched creatures and their wolf minions, more circled around and set the farm on fire. Cuthrek was the first one back. He has never told Elondhil or Kiowyn what happened to his wife and son, and he refused to allow them to enter the remains of the farmhouse.
Cuthrek took Kiowyn to Edoras to seek the King’s justice, taking great umbrage at Elondhil’s warnings that the King had abandoned justice for his people. Instead, Elondhil followed the trail of the orcs, intending to meet out his own justice. He killed three stranglers, wounded in other encounters; but when he saw the white hand painted on the biggest of the orc’s face, he knew that he was outmatched by a treachery that changed him. The world was darker than he had ever imagined, and he could no longer live in the shadows. To the north there were those who had defeated the forces at Angmar. There he would go to seek life renewed with purpose.
