It was a simple gesture;
Not the sort of action one might take to neither bring about great change nor sway the thoughts of those in power.
A simple box of teas long missing then returned to him by someone who had found it along one of the many tree lined paths of the Glade. Most would not see the value in the item. It was but a plain wooden box which contained only a collection of green, brown, orange and black leaves. And yet to him, it was a connection to the past, and a memory of times spent in the company of old friends.
And this act of kindness awoke within him something he had not felt in a long time..... Hope.
Sitting on the steps of his home Aedon glanced out into the glade around him. The snow had left no signs of the long gray winter that had held the land in its icy grip. Spring had moved through touching the trees and shrubs causing flowers to burst forth in a myriad of colors. The rains that had in recent weeks stung his cheeks now fell softly in the early morn dancing upon the leaves of the trees cascading down to nourish the grass that grew tall along the old path. The loud roar of the winters winds surrendered to the soft cooing of a gently zephyr, and all things around him sprung back to life.
He had always loved this time of the year. And the harshness of the winter past made him yearn even more for the spring to return to the land. On past the houses that stood to the east of his home he could see the first rays of light as the sun began its lazy crawl across the sky. Soon daylight would ease into each shadow of the glade, but for now there was time to relax and contemplate the future.
Aegis had become his home long ago, and even when he felt the urge to move on something within her always called him back. Perhaps it was a promise long ago made to Brother Kyriel or maybe it was the people that called the glade home.
The magic of Aegis, though tainted by a dark days still worked through him. He could feel the presence of those long past as they gathered in around him. In the stillness of night they whispered to him and spoke of the great need to bring peace and balance to the land.
He had tried to shut out the call of home. He had done his best to find ways to occupy his time outside Aegis. But as each work day ended he again found himself sitting on his porch staring into the glade past trees and shrubs which had gone too long uncared for.
Inside Connemara, he could hear Janissan stirring and rising from her night’s sleep. He knew it best not to let her know that he had spent yet another night sitting on the steps in the rain. Slowly rising, he picked up the small plain wooden box from the top step and slipped it inside his shirt. Then quietly stepped in through the open door, and closed it behind him.
It was a simple gesture;
Not to be heralded with trumpets or song, but with the steady beating of a heart reborn.
