re: LMB Book Club, The Hobbit Ch. 11: On the Doorstep

Things begin to come together!

(1) What is the nature and the significance of the "Desolation of Smaug"? What details does this chapter add to our picture of this area?

(2) A rarity in The Hobbit, this chapter has no poem, yet even here we see hints of the theme of music, such as how the dwarves' spirits sink when they reach the mountain, after having been lifted up by the hopeful songs of Lake-town. How does this chapter reinforce the power of music?

(3) Why is it Bilbo who, more hopeful than the dwarves when they reach the mountain, peruses the maps and drives them on to find the hidden door? Especially given how low-spirited he was on his first sight of the mountain...

(4) What's the role of magic in Middle-earth? The back-door is described as sealed by magic...how do we interpret that?

I was wondering if we should start a music file for the book club songs, like the OW PUB set. Then maybe when we are done with The Hobbit we can do all the songs at Ales and Tales.....

Great minds think alike, Lindorieh!

I was thinking the same thing. So, of course, I think we should!

I thought this week we could do Laerlenn's version of the Dwarf King Song. Here's the story behind it. The dwarves liked the song so much when they heard it in Lake Town that they made their own dwarvish-sounding version of it. And this is the version we will sing this week at Ales and Tales!

I changed the harp and harp2 files, so they will have to be re-downloaded from the original post.

Sounds good, Lindorieh! I updated my copies and reuploaded them to http://home.earthlink.net/~alduine/abc/ for those who want to download them there.

Calling the poll now: We will meet Sunday at 3pm EST. Any suggestions for a location? Isilwren has offered her house before; or, maybe somewhere mountainous? Thorin's Gate, perhaps.

How about at one of the cave entrances near Thorin's Gate?
