re: LMB Book Club, The Hobbit Ch. 9: Barrels out of Bond

"I am like a burglar that can't get away, but must go on miserably burgling the same house day after day," Bilbo thought during this chapter's sojourn in the Elf-king's halls. Though the danger of this chapter is less, the tedium of this part of the adventure starts to dishearten our plucky little Burglar! It is really all up to him to save the day - again - as we see when Thorin's criterion for when "all hope of escaping in any way had disappeared" is the apparently remote possibility that "the remarkable Mr. Invisible Baggins...[would have] altogether failed to think of something clever."

OK, I'll stop essay writing now and just list some discussion topics, shall I? :-)

(1) In the last chapter we saw examples of Bilbo's quick thinking with the spiders, and here we see a bit of it again when he has the presence of mind to put on the ring just as the elves capture the dwarves. But what about his long thinking? He spends a long time musing on that water-gate and coming up with a plan to use it in the rescue of the dwarves. What do we learn about Bilbo from this?

(2) Elves and Dwarves have a bitter history as hinted at in the last chapter. How do we see that played out in the dwarves' imprisonment? What is the role of the Elven-king (Thranduil) and how is he characterized here?

(3) With the barrels and the water-gate we have a glimpse at the economy of Middle-earth! A convenient trade arrangement seems to exist between the Wood-elves and the Men of the Long Lake. I'm curious to look into more such details of trade routes and the Middle-earth economy, one of those mundane aspects of world-building that can, especially in fun chapters like this one, be such an important backbone to a story.

(4) Besides his cleverness and great luck, in this chapter we see another quality of Bilbo: his kindheartedness in returning the key-ring to the chief guard so that unfortunate elf won't be blamed for the dwarves' escape. What do you think of this side of Bilbo's personality? Have we seen this trait highlighted before?

For music in this chapter we have the little song the elves sing as they send the barrels back to the river. It seems a bit of a travelogue, not unlike the wind poem in Beorn's hall. We might wish to discuss the details of this poem too; and of course it'd be great to have it set to music!

You know what? I wish we'd had someone recording videos of all the Book Club band performances thus far. Maybe if someone knowledgeable about that sort of thing (me, I just do screenshots thus far) is on hand at our next meeting, we could run through some of the older songs as well as this week's, and put together some videos to share with those who couldn't be at the meetings.

Aiya!
I like the idea of video for the songs so far. I have fraps but I'm still learning to use it and it's a might difficult to take video and sing at the same time!

I did get some great tells after our last performance on Monday. Gennyrose's tell was especially touching. She said that she eagerly awaits our performance at A&T every week. It is the highlight for her. I thanked her for her kind words, but I thought you should all know how we are being received.

Looks like we will be meeting Sunday, 2pm EST! Now as for where...hm...we could hang out in the guest house at Rivendell with Legolas while we chat about his dad, how's that sound? :-) Or perhaps a woodsy area near elves...there's that elf camping out in Woodhall in the Shire...or somewhere near Celondim?

Gaiagil, I think I have a song for this week's Book Club. I sent you an email.

There's the grotto next to Duillond -- an elf cave! :)

I'll be splitting attention again. 2-4pm we have a show in Second Life...

Here is the song I found for our poem this week, the Barrel Song, aka Mari's Wedding, a traditional Scottish Bagpipe tune. I switched the bagpipes to flute (at Gaiagil's suggestion) for a more elvish sound.

It's a rather ambitious song, since it calls for 2 lutes, a flute, a clarinet, and ideally a drum and theorbo! We'll see how many we can get at book club. Hey, it may even sound good with a cowbell too!

I can provide a lute or clarinet, so long as I can connect. It could be just me, but I can't seem to connect to anything LOTRO today....

I'll bring my lute, clarinet, and flute for whatever of those parts I'm needed on!

I like the idea of the Duillond grotto for the meeting. Though that is where we're having Ales and Tales in a couple of weeks...but then I think this week it's in Bindbole Wood where we just had Book Club last week, so apparently Book Club has been scouting out the best A&T locations. wink

Oh, and I too am unable to login at the moment. From the sound of things on Twitter, and the fact that my.lotro won't load either, it seems Turbine's servers are down.

Still not able to log in. I'll keep trying. Thanks for the tip about twitter. I'm keeping posted by looking there.

I have no Twit, so I was checking Turbine on Facebook... I find it somewhat disturbing that 161 people like that the servers are down...

I have neither facebook nor Twitter as I don't like either's privacy policies. Lucky for us, Turbine's profiles are public on both media!

How about doing Book Club in Vent, since LOTRO seems to be down for the afternoon?

re: What is vent?

I'm afraid I don't know what vent is, yet

Yeah, I don't have the vent set up yet either so I think we'll pass on that this time.

Latest announcement on twitter is that things should be up "within 2 hours", making it 8pmEST or later by the time it's fixed, and that brings us nearly to the scheduled time for the RP launch tonight. So I think we'll postpone this week's Book Club. May just have to do chapter 9 next weekend, since Monday is A&T and after that school will keep me busy. :-)
