re: Solve-A-Mystery -- March 15 at 4pm /server - SIGN UP THREAD

Greetings!

This is the official sign-up sheet for roles at the upcoming Solve-A-Mystery roleplay event!

I know that March 15th seems like a long time off, but I need to finish writing the mystery story. In order to do this, I must know which character names, races and classes will be used for key roles. I would also like some plot feedback from the actors. So, without further ado, here we go...

The event is scheduled for 4pm EST/servertme. I believe that would be 8am Sunday in Sydney, 10am in Paris, 9pm in London, 10pm in Berlin, and 11pm in Istanbul. That seems like a pretty good balance. People might have to get up early or stay up late to make it, but not insanely early or late for a weekend.

What Is This Event?
A solve-a-mystery roleplay game is a contest. Eight actors plus the host set up a story. Everyone else attends as an investigator, trying to solve the mystery presented in the story. The first three people to correctly solve the mystery win prizes. The mystery is correctly solved by identifying WHO commit the crime and WHY it was done. Six of the actors play suspects, located in adjacent buildings in the same neighborhood. Investigators (competing participants) travel from location to location, asking the actors questions to reveal the clues. The event runs for approximately 90 minutes.

How Do I Participate?
You will need to bring a character to the Raglan neighborhood of Bree-land homesteads. This character can be any level, including fresh out of the starting zone. It can belong to any class and be either gender. It can be a regular character or an alt that you created just for the event. For this particular story, human characters are preferred but all races are welcome.

What Do I Do?
Volunteers will be actors, assigned to one of eight specific roles. There are six Suspects who may have commit the crime which is the center of the mystery. There is a Chief Investigator who handles the in-character coordination of all participants. There is also a Road Warden who travels around the neighborhood, making sure the investigators can locate each of the key roleplay locations (houses where suspects are located). The suspects are given a specific list of clues to give out, as well as guidelines on how to reveal them. The Chief Investigator is supplied with a speech to give the crowd, both to introduce the game and to reveal the solution at the end.

What Is the Mystery?
In the first game, Mrs. Potts pies were stolen from a cooking contest. In the second game, fake trolls were placed in the yard of Mr. Umbridge, giving him a terrible fright and a fall down the stairs. This time, the theme will be a festival celebrating the arrival of a shipment of Ice Wine, with a Mardi Gras feel. The wine has disappeared, along with the host, but how and why?

How Do I Prepare?
All of the actors join an email list. I will send everyone a PDF packet with everything they need to know to participate. I can also offer escorted trips to Wardrobe Street, so that the characters can dress appropriately for their roles. Each of the suspect roles has basic personality information, but the actors are allowed to fill in all the blanks as they wish. The Chief Investigator and Road Warden are allowed to roleplay any persona they wish, as long as they can do their in-character jobs.

Why Are There Five Suspects?
The first game had six suspects but the story was too complicated, so very few people were able to solve it. The second game had only four suspects and it was too easy to solve. This time, we'll have five suspects and the story will be straight-forward. Hopefully we'll get the right level of challenge for everyone.

When Must I Be Available?
First and foremost, you must be online from 3:30pm until 6:00pm on Saturday, March 15th. If a suspect doesn't show up, the entire story falls apart! It is very important that you don't commit if you aren't sure you'll be there. If you are reasonably sure but not 100% certain, sign up for the Road Warden or Chief Investigator roles, as these can be replaced with a few days notice.

How Do I Sign Up?
Reply to this post. Let me know which roles you are interested in - suspect, Chief Investigator, and/or road warden. Mention the name and race of any characters you are willing to use. Also let me know if you are willing to create a character for the game. If you don't have slots open, it's not difficult to get a new free-to-play subscription and run a toon to level 7. Click here to learn how to add a subscription.

These structured roleplay events are a lot of fun. Since there is a specific story and a time limit, we don't suffer from the RP problems that tend to crop up at the Prancing Pony. Even though you will have specific clues to reveal, there is still a lot of freedom and creativity in filling out your character. An entire quarter of a neighborhood is decorated for the event, so the immersion is really fantastic. I only host these twice a year, so don't miss out!

This year, all of the actors who show up will get prizes!

Kira, I have hesitated to sign up as an actor because of my weak role-playing skills. However, since I so enjoyed taking part as an investigator in your last mystery event, I would like to try an d participate as an actor this time around! Please sign me up!

I would like to join in as either my hobbit minstrel, Fayah, or my lovely Dwarf Guardian, Dwifra. Feel free to write either one of them into the mystery!

edited to add: I also have a lovely Woman Burglar name Lhutha who wouldn't mind being an actor. So choose any one of the three!

I'll add that, much like signing on and playing with one of our bands, this is a good place to 'get started' with role play. At least for me it has been, since I'm not experienced at role play (or acting either for that matter). It's fun to try it too! And Kira will have helpful background/instructions to get you oriented beforehand.

Also: the /shortcut command is your friend for assigning emotes to hotkeys for ease of use!

re: Solve-A-Mystery -- March 15 at 4pm /server - SIGN UP THREAD

This solve-a-mystery story will be about the theft of wine just before an annual Ice Wine festival.

I need to start working on the mystery story this week. Right now, it looks like we don't have enough actor sign-ups for a full story. We need three more to host a proper mystery.

Mystery game roles are easy to learn and great fun to bring to life. Please don't be shy due to lack of experience.

So, if you're interested in participating in any role and are reasonably sure you can make it, please sign up today by replying to this post. Thank you!

Alas, that's the weekend I'll be taking students to state convention so there's no chance of me being online on the 15th. I'd love to participate again the next time, though!

re: Solve-A-Mystery -- March 15 at 4pm /server - SIGN UP THREAD

Thank you to everyone who has signed up so far! I am really excited about this event.

We currently have Lilikate, Byrcha, Rimbli, Lhinnthel, Esyae, and Tearna signed up. We need two more actors and a third would be nice as an understudy, in case someone can't make it at the last minute.

I'm working on the story so I'll be able to post general suspect descriptions soon. If you would prefer to be the Chief Investigator instead of a suspect, please let me know.

I'd rather be a suspect as well. Meant to put that in my post instead of actor. DUH. I blame the cold meds. hehe

Looking forward to it.

re: Solve-A-Mystery -- March 15 at 4pm /server - SIGN UP THREAD

It's time to announce the suspect roles!

The victim:
* Mr. Toper, an older gentleman, quite wealthy from a prestigious family, the host of the Ice Wine Festival.

The crime:
* Mr. Toper and the ice wine shipment are missing!

The five suspects are:
* Farmer - Invited by the host supposedly as a show of friendship, but really as a slap in the face.
* Merchant - The head of the dwarven caravan who brought the ice wine, shrewd and stern.
* Banker - A close friend (some say conspirator) of the host, a shark of contract law and lending.
* Adopted Sibling - The younger, adopted sibling of the host. They never got along well.
* Party Crasher - This beguiling yet uninvited guest secretly came for more than free gourmet food.

Recommended race/gender:
* Farmer - A hobbit of either gender, someone who can't quite afford to dress well for the festival.
* Merchant - A dwarf of either gender with a conservative, well-to-do look.
* Banker - A human man or woman with a formal look.
* Adopted Sibling - A human man or woman with a wealthy, noble look.
* Party Crasher - A human or hobbit with a sneaky, rogue-like air.

I have Prudy Roper who is a poor hobbit farmer, in a wash day dress or farming gear she would do very well.

I can also create a character if you are in need.
