re: Solve-A-Mystery Sign-Ups -- Actors Needed! - Oct 25 at 4pm

The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 25 at 4pm to 6pm EST/servertime. I believe that would be 8am Sunday in Sydney, 10am in Paris, 9pm in London, 10pm in Berlin, and 11pm in Istanbul. That seems like a pretty good balance. People might have to get up early or stay up late to make it, but not insanely early or late for a weekend.

What Is This Event?
A solve-a-mystery roleplay game is a contest. Actors plus the host set up a story. Everyone else attends as an investigator, trying to solve the mystery presented in the story. The first three people to correctly solve the mystery win prizes. The mystery is correctly solved by identifying WHO commit the crime and details about that person. Four NPCs will be suspects. Five players will be witnesses, located in adjacent buildings in the same neighborhood. Investigators (competing participants) travel from location to location, asking the witnesses questions to reveal the clues.

How Do I Participate?
You will need to bring a character to the Raglan neighborhood of Bree-land homesteads. This character can be any level, including fresh out of the starting zone. It can belong to any class and be either gender. It can be a regular character or an alt that you created just for the event. All genders, races, and classes are welcome. You will need to wear an appropriate outfit, something you would wear to a masquerade Halloween ball.

What Do I Do?
Volunteers will be actors, assigned to a specific role. There are four NPC Suspects who may have commit the crime which is the center of the mystery. You will play witnesses who provide clues but aren't accused of the crime. There is a Chief Investigator who handles the in-character coordination of all participants. There is also a Road Warden who travels around the neighborhood, making sure the investigators can locate each of the key roleplay locations (houses where suspects and witnesses are located). The witnesses are given a specific list of clues to give out, as well as guidelines on how to reveal them. The Chief Investigator is supplied with a speech to give the crowd, both to introduce the game and to reveal the solution at the end.

What Is the Mystery?
In the first game, Mrs. Potts pies were stolen from a cooking contest. In the second game, fake trolls were placed in the yard of Mr. Umbridge, giving him a terrible fright and a fall down the stairs. During the third game, the theme was a festival celebrating the arrival of a shipment of Ice Wine, with a Mardi Gras feel. The wine and host had been kidnapped by disgruntled dwarves.

This mystery involves the theft of a ruby necklace during a Halloween masquerade ball. It has a Phantom of the Opera theme.

How Do I Prepare?
All of the actors join an email list. I will send everyone a PDF packet with everything they need to know to participate. I can also offer escorted trips to Wardrobe Street, so that the characters can dress appropriately for their roles. The witnesses can be any sort of person attending the masquerade party. The Chief Investigator and Road Warden are allowed to roleplay any persona they wish, as long as they can do their in-character jobs.

Why Are There Four Suspects?
The first game had six suspects but the story was too complicated, so very few people were able to solve it. The second game had only four suspects and it was too easy to solve. Last time, we had five suspects and the story ran fairly well. This time, we'll have four suspects, plus five witnesses, which should help the crowd spread out a bit. Hopefully we'll get the right level of challenge for everyone.

When Must I Be Available?
First and foremost, you must be online from 3:45pm until 5:45pm on Saturday, October 25th. If a witness doesn't show up, the entire story falls apart! It is very important that you don't commit if you aren't sure you'll be there. If you are reasonably sure but not 100% certain, sign up for the Road Warden or Chief Investigator roles, as these can be replaced with a few days notice.

How Do I Sign Up?
Reply to this post. Let me know which roles you are interested in - suspect, witness, Chief Investigator, and/or road warden. Mention the name and race of any characters you are willing to use. Also let me know if you are willing to create a character for the game. If you don't have slots open, it's not difficult to get a new free-to-play subscription and run a toon to level 7.

These structured roleplay events are a lot of fun. Since there is a specific story and a time limit, we don't suffer from the RP problems that tend to crop up at the Prancing Pony. Even though you will have specific clues to reveal, there is still a lot of freedom and creativity in filling out your character. An entire quarter of a neighborhood is decorated for the event, so the immersion is really fantastic. I only host these twice a year, so don't miss out!

This year, all of the actors who show up will get prizes!

Kiralynn,

I'd love to role play a suspect. I really enjoyed the last event, especially grilling the suspects :-). I would enjoy writing more back story for my character, once I have the precis.

Holly (not sure which character or if I make a new one yet for it)

Unfortunately, that is the day of my annual Halloween bash so I won't be able to attend. However if there is anything I can do to help prep let me know!

I'll be a suspect and will provide any race/type of character required.

The last one was so much fun!

I had a blast at the last one and I (Lindorieh) would love to be a suspect.

There are some folks from outside the LMB who would like to volunteer to help at this event.
I thought this might give our regular actors an opportunity to become participants, if they so desire.
Alternately, it might allow us to expand our actors to include people other than suspects.

So, I have some questions and would greatly appreciate your feedback.

* Do we want to invite outsiders in to be actors?

* If so, do we ask them to make an LMB alt to have access to this forum, or do we move the planning off to another GuildLaunch site where they can read and post?

* Would you be interested in playing a role that isn't directly a suspect, such as a "concerned neighbor", who also has clues to distribute?

I am not likely to be able to participate in the event. That said, I think there is no problem with allowing non LMB folks to take any of the various official roles as suspects, marshalls, or whatever you need to make the event a success.

I've been wanting to join ever since I first visited one of the Mystery events, but being an actor with important clues to say and responsibilities is too much stress for me, so I have long wanted to (but been too shy to) ask if there might be a use of a side character who doesn't really interact with other players like the actors do.
Something like a person grumbling to himself and doing a few emotes over in a corner of the house, or maybe someone busy with something so he won't really interact more than talk to himself, or some weird confused person talking to himself, or... well, anything that makes it a relaxing and not scary thing to do ^^;

I would love to have you in my corner muttering how crazy I am and how I drive you to drink, Corulin! :D I could incorporate you into my back story as my troubled brother wink...

Speaking of which, perhaps our veteran actors would post here giving advice to those who might want to try their hand at a role? I think more people would be interested in volunteering if they had an idea of what it's like to be a nefarious criminal... er, I mean suspect! :)

I will be happy to include some side-roles in the story. Corumael, would you be comfortable with a "witness" or other person who had only a small number of clues to share, perhaps clues which are duplicates of those held by the suspects? In this way, there wouldn't be much for you to keep track of, and even if you missed something, you'd have a backup actor giving out the same clues.

lol You'd have to play as an elf in that case, cause I have a whole army of elves, but not many others XD

That would be great! :D It looks so fun to be in a story like that =D I'll feel a lot less freaked out knowing that one of the actors would give out the same clues so nothing would run the risk of getting messed up if I make mistakes :)

Is there a certain type of character I should be playing? I only have a bunch of male elf characters (and two humans though I don't like playing them since they look kind of... not beautiful lol) but the elves do look a bit different form each other. Some nicer, some more grumpy lol

A quick bit of advice for would-be Mystery RPers: 1) Use the Lyrical plugin to store lines which you might need to repeat often. That way you don't have to type them over and over on the fly, and you'll be consistent in what you say if giving out important clues. For example ... Yahr says: "I didn't do it. You can't prove anything." 2) Assign emotes to your hotbar in advance so that you can easily use them when you need them, again without having to type/remember them. The command to assign them is "/shortcut ## /emote" (without the quotes) -- it will assign the emote to a numbered position on the taskbar. Remember that everyone has two sets of bars (three once you have a warsteed) that you can toggle between.

Brilliant suggestions, Byrcha! While I had planned to use Lyrical, I COMPLETELY forgot the other sets of bars and I now I have the problem solved that has been plaguing me on Hollyberye--where to put all the shortcuts I need to have handy when I have every skill slot used. How could I have forgotten? I can't thank you enough, as this has really been plaguing me. ::smackshead:: I think I originally put every one of my travel skills on the unused set, but a bunch of them are on my main hotbars as well and I have been using K to search for the others, and all my LM pets are on the extra set of bars on Hollistar.

Oh, you made my day! Thanks :D!

re: Solve-A-Mystery Sign-Ups -- Actors Needed! - Oct 25 at 4pm

Great suggestions, keep 'em coming!

Here's another one. Use text overrides on emotes to really give your dialog visual appeal and reduce spam.

For example, instead of typing:
"/say And suddenly I heard footsteps in the attic..."
You can type:
"/story And suddenly I heard footsteps in the attic..."
You'll wave your arms around for the /story emote but the text will be replaced with what you've added afterward.

If you do:
"/story"
"/say And suddenly I heard footsteps in the attic..."
You'll end up creating two lines of output for your audience, who will already be quite spammed.
Using the combined emote/text style also makes the animation happen while you're talking instead of before or after.

Here are some useful but often overlooked emotes:
/ahem -- Cough politely when you're disagreeing with someone.
/beg -- Please believe me, I didn't do it!
/dustoff -- I had nothing to do with it.
/flirt -- Surely you don't believe I could have done it?
/impatient -- Aren't you done asking questions yet?
/lookaround -- Well, between you and me...
/no -- I don't think so!
/mourn -- Oh the humanity!
/sad -- I'm so sincere, I burst into tears.
/shakefist -- If I find out who accused me, I'm gonna...
/shrug -- Whatever you say.
/smackhead -- Can you ask me a question that doesn't involve me being guilty?
/story -- I like to use my hands when I talk.
/tantrum -- I have absolutely had it with your accusations!
/whippitydo -- Oh like I really care about that.
/yes -- Exactly!

For flavor, you can always add in...
/sneeze
/warmhands -- If you're standing at a fireplace.
/wipesweat -- Answering questions is hard work.
/bringiton -- You'll need to finish the Skirmisher meta deed to get this.

Also don't overlook the Moods, which change your face to show specific emotions:
/mood_calm -- Default expression
/mood_apprehensive
/mood_angry
/mood_confused
/mood_happy
/mood_mischievous
/mood_sad
/mood_solemn
/mood_surprised

Please be very careful if you use /smoke. The constant and repetitive puffing sound can get old. It's also quite noisy when a whole group starts doing it.
