re: Skilly's Silly Jingles

The Charge of the Fright Brigade

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
Into the valley of Nurn
Rode the four fighters.
“Forward, the Fright Brigade!
Charge for the orcs!” they said.
Into the valley of Nurn
Rode the four fighters.

“Forward, the Fright Brigade!”
Was there a fighter dismayed?
Not though each of them knew
Their odds had never been slighter.
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Nurn
Rode the four fighters.

Orcs to the right of them,
Trolls to the left of them,
Goblins in front of them
Shouted and roared.
With weapons drawn and faces fell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Mordor,
Into the mouth of hell
Rode the four fighters.

The hobbit munching on kidney bean pies,
The beorning, in bear form, with death in his eyes,
The dwarf fiercely waving his battle-honed axe,
The elf, sneering haughtily down at their backs,
Charged into a troll-horde, while
The orc-fires flamed brighter.
The hobbit’s gut rumbled;
The horses all stumbled;
Down the four tumbled.
Then the hobbit emitted three terrible toots;
The dwarf ran so fast he ran out of his boots;
The beorning tripped and fell into a puddle,
The elf looked scornfully down at the muddle.
Into orc smiters and fierce goblin biters,
Ran the four fighters.

Orcs to the right of them,
Trolls to the left of them,
Goblins behind them
Choked and died;
For the stench that arose
From huge hobbit farts that oft did repeat,
From wet bear fur like rotting meat,
From filthy, long-unwashed dwarf feet
Flattened their foes.
The elf struck no blow with his bow or his sword;
He never, not once, engaged with the horde,
But composed a short song
just one hundred staves long,
Of his valorous ride.
As the day grew brighter,
The foul fumes rose and drifted away.
In the midst of the dead, having saved the day,
Stood an elf and three fighters.

The hobbit was happily combing her toes,
The beorning, in man-form, was dusting his clothes,
And the dwarf was thoughtfully picking his nose.
Alone stood the songwriter.
With stirring words, the beautiful elf
sang glorious melodies praising himself.
Honour the charge he made!
The star of the Fright Brigade,
Noble elf fighter!

The Traveling Players

This poem is dedicated to all traveling players.

A traveler’s life is a difficult one;
we’re out in the rain and the burning hot sun.
We often get sick of the pub food we eat,
which is mostly fried spuds and inedible meat.

We’ve had many a terrible, no-good bad day,
when the lines wouldn’t speak and the songs wouldn’t play,
but the worst day of all was the hour we spent
in the small market township of Bumble, in Brent.

The baker of Bumble was a terrible guy—
baked a cow-pat in crust and sold it as pie;
and the butcher of Bumble was quite a magician:
sold chicken that mewed, and made beef out of pigeon.

The brewer of Bumble was a cranky old fellow,
and his watery beer was suspiciously yellow.
Worst of all was our play. The crowds came in masses,
but their wallets were just as tight-closed as their ……..minds.

So please make us glad that we’re here, and not there;
we hope you’ll be open, and generous, and fair.
We have something for everyone, high-born or low.
Please watch and enjoy. Now—on with the show!

re: Skilly's Silly Jingles

I love your silly poems. I'm glad you put them down here so I could re-read them. Sometimes they scroll so fast in-game I miss things...I look forward to seeing your next one. They always make me smile.
