re: Which charity to choose?

It's almost that time of year again... time to raise money for people in need!

Since there was some concern last year about raising money for Extra Life, I thought now (far in advance) would be a good time to see if there is another charity that might suit us better. This charity would need to be...

* Reputable. Hopefully they don't keep a large percentage of the money they take in.
* Flexible, so that people can choose from a variety of payment methods.
* Reportable, with a way for people to donate that other people can see (IE: the Extra Life donation web page), so that we can tell when people have "paid" for their auction wins.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks! :)

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab Utah

Look up the work they do with abused and neglected animals of all sorts. They are known nationwide, and openly invite anyone that wishes to spend time with them helping the creatures in their care. We are called upon to be good stewards of all that walks upon the earth. And I have always believed that helping those with no voice a way to be heard.

re: Which charity to choose?

I nominate the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation (http://www.mhopus.org/). I've worked with them in the past and they're top notch people in my book. VH1's Save the Music (http://www.vh1savethemusic.org/) is also a great group of people doing great work.

On their crowdrise page (https://www.crowdrise.com/hollandsopusfdn), there is a donations button that displays who donated. I'm not sure if that would provide what you need?

They get relatively high scores as a charity as well. (http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=8038#.VdJGNPlVhBc)

Saving music is a wonderful undertaking. But saving a life trumps that every time.

re: Which charity to choose?

Let's please not get into a debate about which causes are best, only which charities.
The world is sadly full of problems and we all find our own individual ways to help, causes near and dear to our hearts.

The charity that Christopher Lee (Saurman) supported is UNICEF.
If there's a way to track those donations, it might make a nice memorial to the late actor?

If more than one suggested charity meet our minimum requirements, why not allow folks to pick/choose which they want to donate to? As in, you can donate to A, B, or C (or some combination).

re: Which charity to choose?

The auction was already a technical challenge last year. It took over an hour to sort through donations and prizes, with only one site to skim. I wouldn't want to make it even harder to organize and track.

Here's the tracker page for the charity we donated to last year:
http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=5756#.VdJWa_lVhBc

We could set up a Lonely Mountain Band page and not worry about doing it through Rick.

UNICEF, while a worthy cause has had many issues in the past involving the misuse of funds. I do though like that it is an international charity.

I tend to put my money towards where it will do some good, and not where it seems popular to give.

re: Which charity to choose?

One charity which I personally support is the Polaris Project (http://www.polarisproject.org/about-us/overview), which is dedicated to ending human trafficking. This is their tracker page: http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=12434#.VdKLvPndYfg

It appears that setting up a personal fundraising page (https://www.polarisproject.org/take-action/fundraise/peer-to-peer-campaigns) would likely meet our need for reportability.

I have no issues doing Extra Life again, though.

I don't have any problem doing Extra Life again, too.

Honor and fun,

My Lonely Mountain Band characters include Dannigan (main, 100th-level Human Warden), Briamil (95th-level Elven Rune-keeper), Gori "Mithrilfist" Brightforge (95th-level Dwarven Champion), Mithrilfists (also Gori, 60th-level Dwarven Guardian), and Whittle (95th-level Hobbit Hunter). Far apart, never alone! =)

I like this idea a lot, as we are a musically-focused kin, and Landroval is a musically-oriented server. With the influx of new people by then, perhaps there can be two charities from which donors can chose--a musical one like this and save lives one as has been suggested. I do like Byrcha's idea of a choice. It would diffuse controversy over the single choice of charity.

re: Which charity to choose?

I had also thought of Doctors without boarders, but I am not sure if they take in donations on a site.

Having run the United Way campaign for a large corporation, I am a bit jaded, or turned off really by the idea of going with any of the big names in charity.
