Chapter 7: Of the Silmarils
(1) What is the symbolic significance of the Silmarils - i.e., why jewels? Why try to preserve imperishably the light of Aman? Why a crafted object?
(2) Why does Melkor lust for the Silmarils?
(3) The rumors spread by Melkor include a suggestion that the Valar feared the "makers' power that Iluvatar had bequeathed" to the elves. What sort of [sub-creative?] power is he talking about; what is it the elves have power to make, and why might the elves believe this rumor that the Valar would fear or be jealous of such a power?
(4) How might relations between Elves and Men nowadays (in game time that is - the Third Age) be different if Melkor had not poisoned the Noldor's thoughts against Mortal Men that were to come?
(5) Despite all of Melkor's machinations, Feanor's own tragic flaw is deeply at work here: "Feanor began to love the Silmarils with a greedy love, and grudged the sight of them to all save to his father and his seven sons; he seldom remembered now that the light within them was not his own." Conclusions?
(6) Let us discuss the council of the Valar and the judgment of Feanor....Do you think the Valar took the right approach and responded justly/wisely to Feanor's actions and the general strife among the Noldor?
