re: Quickfoot Adventures

Chapter 6: Rivendell Part 2

The room was not extremely spacious, but was comfortably furnished. A writing desk supplied with parchments, ink and quills sat facing a window looking out onto a flower garden. A canopied bed sat against the wall. It wasn’t large, but big enough for two hobbits plus some, as most big folk beds were. Tam closed and locked the door and headed toward the bed.

“Tamoro Quickfoot!” Tearna put her hands on her hips as she turned to face her husband. "Whatever is you up to? I thought we was here ta show that…” but she was stifled as the burglar turned around and put his hand over her mouth.

“Shhhhh…” he warned. Releasing his wife, he went back to the door and put his ear against it. Hearing nothing, he headed back towards the bed.

“I thought,” Tearna continued at a loud whisper, “we was here ta show that blade ta Mr. Elrond! You wanted ta see what the elfies knowed about it? Why is you hidin’ it?” She followed him to the bed and sat down next to him, taking his hand.

“I don’t know,” Tam shook his head and looked down at his feet. “I just don’t know if it’s wise ta trust the elves is all.”

“S’not like the elf’d hook up with brigands or orcs or anythin’, sweet stuffs,” Tearna said. She squeezed her husband’s hand gently. “Why doesn’t you trust um now?” The burglar shook his head and sighed.

“I just know they’ll take the dagger and I’ll never see it again!” he explained, a hint of anger in his voice.

“But sweet stuffs, if they’s bad things lookin’ for that blade, better that the elfies has it than us!”

“Yeah… maybe,” Tam trailed off with a sigh. “I’m so tired. I can’t think straight.” He stood and started pulling off his armor. “I’m going to sleep and maybe then…” he pulled covers back and slipped between sheets as soft as silk, blade still tucked into his britches.

He was asleep almost as soon as his head hit the pillow. With a sigh, Tearna got to her feet and headed to the door. She turned and looked at Tam one last time, before turning the lock and letting herself outside.

An elf standing not too far away told Tea that Wicked and Night had been placed in the room next door to hers. Her bare feet made a happy padding sound on the stone floor, as she went down and knocked on the door. Night opened it and with a surprised smile, let Tearna in.

“Oh Night,” the hobbit sighed and hugged her friend.

“I know,” the elf replied. “Wicked told me. What is going on?”

“I doesn’t know. He’s sleepin’,” Tearna shook her head and took a seat that was offered to her. Wicked was sitting on the bed and Night took the other chair in the room.

“I never seen him act like this afore. It’s like… like… like he wants to keep that hateful dagger!” the hobbit burst out, anger mixed with the edge of tears. It’s been nothin’ but troubles. I’d think he’d be glad ta be rid of it!”

“Could be something stronger at work here,” Wicked offered softly. “If this blade really IS connected to the rings somehow…” and he trailed off.

“You mean something dark,” Tearna added, not so much a question as a statement. Wicked nodded.

“Or it could be he really is just tired,” the hunter added. “It’s been a harrowing several days. Talk to him when he wakes. Calmly. Just ask what he thinks is the best thing to do,” the hunter offered and Tearna nodded.

“Is you all tired too?” the hobbit asked looking at her friends who both shook their heads no.

“Good, can we go do somethin’? I doesn’t feel like sittin’ round brushin’ my toe hairs!” she chuckled softly at the look on the big folks faces.

“Sure,” Nightmagic stood to her feet. “Come let me show you some of my favorite places in Rivendell. I grew up here, you know!”

“Oh yes! What did yer family want?” Tearna asked as they headed to the door. Nightmagic chuckled.

“To make sure I was safe," the elf chuckled as she grabbed her cloak and headed to the door. "They’d heard these and other rumors about the goings on in Bree and were somehow convinced that my life was in danger. If they only knew," the elf chuckled as the two girls left the room.

“Well now…” Wicked said as he watched the two leaving. “I guess that makes me chopped liver? It's all right. I’ll just stay here and entertain myself,” he added louder as the door closed. With a shrug, he grabbed his quiver and worked on cleaning up and repairing arrows damaged in the troll skirmish.

Next door, Tam groaned and turned over in his sleep, then turned over again.

“No, is myee!” the hobbit slurred in his sleep. His eyelids twitched wildly as in his dream he ran frantically. He wasn’t certain just what was chasing him, only that it was very bad. And it wanted the dagger. The dagger that was HIS!

Whatever IT was, seemed to be chasing him towards a darkness. Tam tried to dodge to the right, but the things chasing him were there. He lunged to the left only to find more nasties ready to bite him. And the fear inside him grew as the darkness before him grew ever closer.

“No! This isn’t right,” the burglar screamed in his dream. “I’m not going to the darkness! I’m going to the light!” He turned around to see the brightness behind him and his unknown pursuers between him and the light; shadows that were growing ever closer. Behind the shadows, faint and ghostly in the brightness, he saw the image of the Golden Lady, her hand extended to him. But he had to face the shadows to get to that hand.

“Tearna!” he cried out, sitting upright in bed, cold and trembling, soaked in sweat. But there was no Tearna to be found.

Out behind the Last Homely House, the two girls were sitting amidst lovely pink flowers near a waterfall. Night was sharing happy tales of growing up here. Suddenly, Tearna gasped and stood up.

“What?” the elf asked, puzzled by the look of sheer terror on Tearna’s face.

“I doesn’t know. Somethin’s wrong with my Tam!” Tearna explained, a note of panic in her voice. She made a mad dash back to the room where the burglar was sleeping, Nightmagic close behind. Yanking the door open, they were greeted by an empty room, the bed disheveled.

"Where's my Tam?" Tearna wailed.

Chapter 6: Rivendell Part 3

"Oh no...no..." said Tearna, almost panic stricken. "We's got ta find him, Night!" and she dashed out the door to an elf sitting nearby. Looking up from her scroll, the elf explained that she had seen a drunk hobbit wander out of the room, but had not given him much notice and didn’t know where he had gone. Queries to others in the hall received similar replies. Finally, one silver haired elf recalled seeing a strange hobbit stumbling up the ramp to the second level.

“The East Porch!” Tearna grabbed Nightmagic’s hand and pulled as she headed up the ramp. Tam had brought her to that spot for picnics many times.

Bursting through the doors, Tearna gasped. Tamoro lay on the ground, shivering, his head cradled by an older hobbit, Bilbo Baggins.

“Tam!” Tearna squealed as she made a beeline for his prostrate form.

"Shhhh...” said the silver haired hobbit. “I think he’ll be okay but something's got him spooked, and that's no joke! One of you should go fetch Elrond."

“I’ll go,” Nightmagic offered, turned and hurried back out the door.

Tearna gathered Tam in her arms, held him close and whispered, "It's okay sweet-stuff, I'm here..." tears rolling down her face, falling on Tam's cheek.

"Oh Mr Bilbo!” she wept. “It's that dagger! I knows it! I told him he should have jus' gived it ta Elrond like we said!"

"Yes, he should have...” replied a deep voice. Looking up, the hobbitess saw Elrond, coming through the doorway, Nightmagic and Wicked right behind him. “It appears the blade is starting to have an effect on him," the elf stated calmly. Fortunately, he is strong and this was caught early enough to do no lasting damage.

"However, I must break the bond the weapon has started to forge in him," he explained as he knelt beside Tamoro. Elrond placed one hand on Tam's forehead and the other on his chest, then closed his eyes. For long moments, nothing seemed to happen. Suddenly, Tam mumbled something unintelligible and his body went stiff. A moment later, a blood curdling scream erupted from him and he collapsed back into Tearna’s arms, limp and motionless.

“S’he dead, Mr. Elrond?” Tearna asked as she patted her husband’s cheek. “Oh, don’t lets him be dead!” she wept and clutched him tighter.

Elrond smiled and shook his head. But, before the elf could reply, the burglar’s eyes fluttered open and took focus on Tearna. He reached up and brushed a tear from her cheek.

"Now, let's not have any crying...” he said weakly. “Your eyes get all puffy, you know that," and he smiled.

"Oh Tam!" Smiling through tears of happiness, she hugged him hard. With a cough, he disengaged himself from her choke hold.

"Ack! Not so tight!" Tam complained, but smiled as he sat up, supported by Tearna and Bilbo.

"Don't you think it's time to put this behind you, Master Quickfoot?" Elrond asked and the tall elf stood to his feet.

"You mean this..." the burglar reached behind him and produced the dagger. Lord Elrond nodded, but didn’t move. With a last wistful sigh, Tam started to hand it to the elf. The burglar’s hand froze as he gazed at the dagger.

"It is very prett…,” he started, choked off by a quick tight squeeze from Tearna. A smile lit up his face as he looked from the blade to his wife.

“Please take it Lord Elrond,” he looked up at the elf lord, arm fully outstretched and only now did Elrond reach his hand out to receive it.

“You know…I think I’m glad to be rid of it. Been nothing but a headache since I came across it,” and with a smile, he wrapped his arms around his wife.

“Friends,” the elf lord tucked the blade into the folds of his robe. “You should take Master Quickfoot back to his room. He will sleep peacefully now. We’ll talk more about this tomorrow, but for now Tamoro needs to rest.” With a quiet flutter of silky robes, Lord Elrond turned and departed with Bilbo following close behind.

Back in the room, a sumptuous dinner had been laid out and the four friends ate heartily before retiring for the evening.

Tamoro slept quietly and well into the next morning. He woke slowly, aware of Tearna snuggled beside him, her small hand resting lightly on his chest as was her habit. With a small stretch, he opened his eyes and was momentarily surprised to find himself not at home in his own bed.

And then the memories of the dagger came back, but wispy and thin, almost like a dream that already was fading from memory. He covered his wife’s hand with his own, smiled and sighed happily. Tearna stirred beside him, murmuring something about sweet stuff without opening her eyes.

“I’m starving!” Tamoro gruffed suddenly and sat up. Tearna yawned and stretched. “Must be at least time for second breakfast!” Tam continued as he crawled out of the large bed.

“And I feel like a new hobbit!” he chortled and did a little dance step, clicking his heels together. “Get up, lass! Let’s go find some food!” the burglar bellowed as Tearna chuckled and rolled out of bed.

To their surprise, it was past second breakfast and time for lunch. They found Wicked and Nightmagic were already seated. After eating their fill and then some, they were told that Lord Elrond would like to see the four of them in his library.

The elven lord sat reading as they entered. With a smile he laid aside his book and beckoned them forward. “You are looking much better, Master Quickfoot. I trust you are feeling better today?” the elf asked. Tamoro nodded.

“Thank you, Lord Elrond,” he bowed slightly. “I am quite myself again.”

“That’s good to hear,” the elf nodded and crossed his arms across his chest. “Now, about the dagger…” he trailed off and watched the burglar’s face for reaction, smiling when there was none.

“I know you are all curious about it, but the less you know, the safer you will be. Suffice it to say that you’ve done the free people a very great service by finding it and bringing it here. We had offered a sizable reward for the return of the item, a reward which you have earned.”

The elf stood, picked up a good sized bag of coins and handed it to the burglar. “More than that, you have our deepest gratitude,” continued Lord Elrond as he bowed low to the four adventurers.

"You are welcome to remain here as long as you wish or feel the need. When you are ready to return home an escort will see you back to the Last Bridge.”

And so, the quartet spent the afternoon with Nightmagic and her family, but were eager to head home the following morning. A careful counting of the reward drew a soft whistle from Wicked.

“One hundred gold! Not a small reward,” he mused and Tamoro nodded.

“You know Wicked,” the burglar sighed, “the one who truly deserves the reward can never claim it. All we did was transport it. Robert found it and gave his life to secure it.”

Wicked nodded, but said nothing. Tam looked around at his friends.

“But he had a family, who are likely still alive somewhere. This money would make things much easier for them. What do you think about us giving at least part of it to his wife?” Tam asked and was rewarded by instant nods from everyone.

“Give it all to her,” Wicked spoke up. “You’re right. Robert was the real hero. We don’t need it and can easily get more. Do we have any idea where she might be now?”

Tam shrugged, “Not exactly, but perhaps Aldekim would have some ideas.”

And back in Bree, the scholar did have some ideas. Robert’s wife had originally hailed from the Esteldin area. With a few quick preparations Tamoro, Wicked and Aldekim made the several days journey to Esteldin. Asking around they discovered that she had come home, only to find that her family home had been attacked by goblins and her father slain.

Robert’s wife and daughter lived in the near ruin of her family home with her mother. As the three drew near, the two women were out toiling in a small garden. The younger woman dropped her trowel and rushed to pick up her daughter, while the older woman stood with her hoe pointed at them.

“We’ve nothin’ for ya ta steal. Best jus’ move on along,” the old woman shook the hoe at them. It might have been funny had it not been so sad. The three dismounted and took a step forward.

“You’ve no need to fear us, ma’am” Aldekim responded softly to the older woman. “Elizabeth, we’re here on account of Robert,” the scholar added looking at the younger woman.

The widow gasped, eyes suddenly glistening. “Robert’s dead,” she choked out. “Been gone a long time now!”

“Indeed he is dead,” Tamoro began as he held out the small figurine wrapped in soft blue parchment. “This package was one of the last things he did before his death,” the hobbit explained, his own voice cracking a bit as he recalled the words of the note. The woman sat the child down, took the parcel and carefully unwrapped it, eyes filling with tears as she saw the wooden rooster inside.

"I always loved these," she said softly, voice choked with emotion as tears washed streaks in the dust on her cheeks. "But we never had the money..." her voice trailed off.

“Read the note,” Tam said softly as he stepped back.

The woman unfolded the parchment and read:

'To my darling wife, 'Not a day goes by that I don't think of you, my dear. How I miss your smile, the glow in your eyes, the feel of your hand in mine. If only I could go back and change things. It is my hope that Aldekim can get this to you. All my love and life, sweetheart.'

Your loving husband, Robert.

Tears flowed freely now as the woman sank to her knees. “I thought he’d for…” she sobbed. Scooping her daughter up, she hugged the child tightly and wept.

“Thank ye, strangers. Lizzy thought Robert had abandoned them. Tis comforting ta know that wasn’t the case,” the old woman smiled and laid her hoe aside.

“He died a hero," continued Tam. "He took something very important from the enemy and there was a reward for finding it.” The hobbit knelt before the widow, holding out the large bag of gold.

“This coin will help you rebuild and live comfortably,” Tamoro explained as the woman took the heavy sack, eyes large in bewilderment.

"I don't know what to say," she whispered. "I never im..."

"Ya say thank ye!" the older lady stepped forward. "Thank ye, heartily! Ya've given' us our life back!"

"Wasn't us," Wicked said with a little bow. "It was Robert. We just got to deliver it."

“Apologies," the older woman blushed, wiping her hands on a dirty apron.

"We’d offer some refreshment, but as ye can see, we’ve none ta offer,” she bowed her head.

“No need for apologies, ma’am,” Wicked tipped his hat. “We’ve done what we came to do.”

“Indeed,” Tamoro smiled and bowed to the ladies. "This won't replace your husband, but it will make the memories sweeter. May the winds of fortune blow in your favor ladies," Tam said as he moved to his pony.

"I think now they shall,” Robert's widow stood to her feet, a soft smile on her face.

Awash with feelings of warmth and contentment, the three gentlemen mounted their horses and quietly headed home.

The End!

(Epilogue next week! *wink*)

re: Quickfoot Adventures

The Epilogue

Tam parted company with Aldekim and Wicked, smiling as he turned his pony towards home. The pony seemed just as eager to be home as he. As they approached the neighborhood, the pony picked up it's steps. It had been an interesting, albeit dangerous, past couple of weeks and the burglar was ready for things to get back to normal.

The sun was low on the horizon as the house came into view. It was nearly suppertime. Tam didn't need to check the sundial in the yard to confirm this though as his stomach growled at him. His stomach was much better than any sundial. He wasn't sure if all hobbits were like this, or if it was some odd ability he alone possessed. But, he didn't wonder about it too much.

"That's something for those big thinker types like Mr. Elrond or Gandalf the Wizard to figure out, I guess," he thought as he hopped off his pony and began to unsaddle him. While the burglar had a good education, as hobbits go, he was still very much a simple homebody in his heart.

"I'm home!" he said as he shut the door behind him, tossing his jacket in a nearby chair. No need to be sneaky here. This was the home he shared with the love of his life.

"Howdy, sweet-stuffs!" said Tearna, smiling as she greeted him with a kiss.

"Hullo precious" he replied, returning the kiss. "It's nearly suppertime. I guess I'd best see to getting things ready."

"Oh, no need for that, cutie!” Tearna chirped as she laced her arm through his and slowly strolled with him to the kitchen. “Chade and Jasmine stopped by and they fixed up a supper knowin’ you’d be home soon.

"We’s got such good friends!" Tearna squeezed her husband’s arm gently.

“Yes,” he smiled. “Yes, we do!” Tam noticed a bit of flour dust on her cheek. "And did you help?" he said, with a wry smile, knowing his wife's complete lack of skill in the kitchen.

"I did!" she said, smiling proudly. “But only on the easy parts,” she added with a soft giggle.

The food was wonderful and Tam shared details of the trip and meeting Robert’s wife as they ate. More than once Tearna had to bring out her hanky.

“I’m s’proud of you, my love!” she leaned over and kissed his cheek. “Somebody oughta write a story ‘bout this!” and they both chuckled at the thought.

Tummy’s sated, they washed up and went outside to relax. The night was clear and crisp. The moon and stars shone brightly and the sounds of frogs and crickets had a calming, peaceful effect. Filling his pipe with some Old Toby (his favourite smoke) Tam leaned back against the stairs, Tearna on his arm, her head on his shoulder.

"It's been an eventful past couple of weeks, hasn't it?" he mused, almost to himself before taking a draw on his pipe.

"M-hmm, sure has," the hobbit lass replied, eyes closed and enjoying the moment.

"I'm so very sorry for scaring you like that," said Tam. "I guess that dagger was more dangerous than either of us guessed."

Tearna squeezed his arm and gave him a kiss on the cheek. "When I thought I'd lost you...." she shook her head and laid it back on his shoulder.

"I'm not even sure how I ended up on the East Porch,” Tam continued softly. "I had a dream...well, nightmare was more like it. Shadows were everywhere… chasing me. I kept trying to get to the light, but the shadows blocked my way,” he shook his head and took another draw of his pipe.

“Then… a hand reached out of the light.” Tam wrapped an arm snugly around his wife. “Not rightly sure whose hand it was, but it was soft and warm." Tam continued, "It reminded me of you, so I think… maybe… that's how I found my way there," his voice trailed off as he kissed Tearna’s forehead.

They sat comfortable in silence for a long while as noises of the night serenaded them.

"Tearna?" Tam asked, voice soft and low.

"Mmm, yes?” Tea replied drowsily.

"I love you.”

"I loves you too."

"More than pie..." the burglar smiled and hugged his wife.

"Much more than pie..." she replied and sighed happily.

As the night deepened, the two sat taking it all in; the singing insects, a nicker from one of the ponies, the soothing trickle of water in the fountain. Tearna snuggled closer to Tam in the cooling night air. A slight feeling of dread, very out of place here, passed over him and he shivered.

"It's not over yet, is it..." he thought to himself. But, no matter. Whatever came, they would face it together. And that’s how it was supposed to be.

Looking down at Tearna as she dozed peacefully, he gently nudged her and whispered "time for bed, punkin," and kissed her forehead.

"Mmmmmm, but I's too comfy ta moves," she whispered back, still half asleep.

"Okay then, my love," he whispered. And scooping her up in his arms, he carried her into the house and up the stairs to bed.

THE END

I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge Tam's part in helping this story come together. It started as an tiny idea for a fight in the Trollshaws to help a Runekeeper beset by orcs and grew into so much more! In particular, the Epilogue was Tam's. I just fluffed it up and helped it flow a bit. He is a good storyteller in his own right.

Thank you to all who came to listen over the many, many weeks! It was fun. *hugs* :)

re: Quickfoot Adventures

It was "A tale that grew in the telling", to borrow a quote from The Professor.

We would also like to thank those folks who were nice enough to allow us to include them in our story. Too many to list here, and if I tried, I would inevitably forget someone (and we can't have that, now can we?). It's been a great ride!

Aldekim Adventures? *scribbles it down on a random piece of paper*

re: Quickfoot Adventures

Aldekim Adventures? Hmmm...

It was a beautiful spring day in Bree. The sun sparkled through frothy white clouds, providing warmth against the slight bite of a cool north wind. Birds chirped happily and the sounds of children playing and a dog barking drifted down to the scholar's study where the scholar was engrossed in study.

A client had approached him about creating something brand new: a pie finder; for pies that had been lost or perhaps stolen, or pies behind a door... or perhaps inside a vault. It was a fascinating concept, one that was certain to fetch much gold, especially from hobbits. If anyone could make this happen, it was Aldekim! Rubbing tired eyes, he hunched over his books, ignored the ruckus of noises from outside his window and focused on the lore in front of him.

hehehee

Ahh, Raiders of the Secret Pie Vault. Arch pie thief Aldekim works on a nefarious plan....

I certainly hope no one takes me seriously about Aldekim Adventures. I was just basking in the glow of being a part of the wonderful Quickfoot Adventures.

haha! And can you guess who requested this pie finder? Bilwise, the famed purveyor of pies (and other assorted culinary delights) or perhaps the always hungry Sullo? Or mayhaps it was... Tearna, the naughty! hehe

Just having fun Mr. Aldekim! :)
