re: Lyrics for Lament for Edhelion

Crystalleowyn and Harnuth played this lovely song at Nibbles & Nobs this evening. It was wonderful! Happy

Lyrics:

Amidst the crags of mountains blue
There echoes still a silent song
Lamenting that which Elves once knew:
The refuge of Edhelion.

Her gates were bright as braided gold
Her walls the stars' light did reflect
An age's lore her heart did hold;
Such was her duty to protect.

Ai, Edhelion, that place!
She harboured safe the Elven race.
Ai, Edhelion, Edhelion.

Her people gathered living wood
With which to craft each ship of white;
In Mithlond's bay the vessels stood
And broke the calling seabird's flight.

In sunlit glades round haven's stone
There lay the many vineyards fair;
The finest fruits were in them sown
To make a nectar sweet to share.

Ai, Edhelion! Alas!
Her gentle bliss was not to last.
Ai, Edhelion, Edhelion.

He sought to break the bonds of death,
A dour-handed Dwarven Lord;
With heart as cold as mountain's breath
He gathered then his shadowed horde.

With goblin spear and mace of troll
Did Skorgrim come to haven's gate;
Her lore he thought would save his soul
From that which is the mortal fate.

Ai, Edhelion, that name!
But in the dawn-break Skorgrim came.
Ai, Edhelion, Edhelion.

Her gates were felled like brittle oak,
Her walls were lit with angry flame,
And death draped then its heavy cloak
Around Edhelion to claim.

And in her heart, the archive lay
Defended by one Elf alone:
Brave Talagan, who vowed to stay
Till death would take him for its own.

Ai, Edhelion! Such pain;
Her lifeblood every stone did stain.
Ai, Edhelion, Edhelion.

Then Skorgrim came to haven's heart
And bade her master stand aside;
But Talagan caused stone to part,
And Elf and Dwarf together died.

A refuge thus a tomb became,
And from that place the light has gone.
Now sorrow echoes from its name:
The ruins of Edhelion.

Ai, Edhelion! It lies
As shadow on immortal eyes.
Ai, Edhelion, Edhelion.

Ai, Edhelion! It lies
As shadow on immortal eyes.
Ai, Edhelion, Edhelion.

re: Lyrics for Lament for Edhelion

It's very lovely! I believe the author is Kemendin of Nimrodel server, from days long past.

When Paris was attacked by terrorists, an event to show support was held on a French server, Sirannon, I believe. The Music Community gathered to pay tribute to our French friends in Middle-earth.

I wanted to to do something, and it is well known I can't arrange a note of music, so I took that lovely haunting arrangement by Theromin, and adapted it for the event. I triple boxed, adding a doubled flute, mainly so that I could have my three hobbits dressed as the French flag. I know I will never have cause to sing that song again, and have always wandered what to do with one-time only songs, so here it is, to show support for any French readers and perhaps remind our divided world that we are all in this together.

Je ne parle pas français...
Mais j’ai écrit une petite chanson pour vous
Pour exprimer ma solidarité, de l’Amérique à la France

#Amidst the Seine, a river blue
#Lamenting tragic times too new
#Floats the sorrow of a song
#The City of Light carries on

#She gave us light when all was dark
#Enlightening the new world's heart
#Intellect set her apart
#Along with gifts of stunning art

#Oh Paris how we care for you
#We feel your pain, we weep for you
#Cher Paris, cher France, we stand with you

#Her people gather strength anew
#Parisien character shines through
#Beneath a flag, blue, white and red
#As solidarity is bred

#You will not suffer tyranny
#A nation that respects the free
#The world strikes up a symphony
#One poignant in its sympathy

#Paris we will stand with you
#Our friendship is lasting and true
#Dear France we know you will get through

#Your individuality
#Exceptional mentality
#Combine to make your nation strong
#To rise above this dreadful wrong

#The beacon rises in the sky
#As all Free People ponder why?
#The answer is a mystery
#But hope derives from history

#Paris sheds initial fear
#La Marseillaise rings loud and clear
#As France holds fast to all that is dear

%break
#The world heaves a collective sigh
#As tears of glass shatter the sky
#We wish that we could help you heal
#Our empathy is very real

#We salute your heart at this time
#All shake their heads at heinous crime
#It's hard to find the words to say
#Our thoughts are with you night and day

#Our sorrows flow like sad rain
#Our dear French friends, we feel your pain
#Our dear French friends, you will rise again

#We know the French have stalwart hearts
#We will not let you stand apart
#Our admiration of your strength
#Resonates, as does your grace

#One day soon may we hear again
#The laughter in your heart, my friend
#Now sorrow echoes in the streets
#In synch with broken heart beats

#Paris we will stand with you
#Our friendship is lasting and true
#Dear France we know you will get through

#Paris how we care for you
#We feel your pain, we weep for you
#Cher Paris, cher France, we stand with you

re: Lyrics for Lament for Edhelion

If anyone is interested, these are the lyrics I sang. It's a poem titled Arwen's Lament, by Antipodean Writer, that I got here: http://lotroplayers.com/2017/11/15/antipodean-writer-arwens-lament/ The music was a transcription of an original (non-soundtrack) song called Arwen's Vigil, which you can listen to here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0tBS_IAX-M I just sort of threw the two together and hoped that it worked.

Now my lord is dead! Gone to join the dead! In the House of the Kings he lies
In the Silent Street he lies still as stone, on the bier where he last closed his eyes.
‘Tis a bitter gift doomed to mortal men: I must bear it. How much I've lost!
It's too heavy for us immortal-born to bear: so never did I count the cost!

I have laid me down on Cerin Amroth – where my lord plighted troth to me.
Then I gazed to the West where all elves must go – I renounced it, for the love of he.
When the darkness passed, as the Twilight fades, the elves depart by ship I know.
Back to Eldamar where the Valar dwell. Mandos' Doom on us doth make it so.

Here the mallorn leaves fall to cover me, as I rest, laying down my head
On this hill of green, looking at the stars. This place shall well become my bed.
Lórien emptied all of its elven folk – who recalls of what we did? Whyfor?
Only trees shall recollect that we elves once were – we who planted them long centuries before.

Elrond! Father, dear! I forget you not! Though you're far away over sea-foam
Still I love you yet! Me, your dear Arwen! Though I lie upon this hill alone.
Cerin Amroth feels the spring I'll never see – for I sense my mortal doom draws nigh.
Now I understand what all mortals know: as an elf-maid I should never die.

Sundered from the earth, the circles of Eä, I shall journey on where mens' souls go.
Elf-home Eldamar, I will never see. Father dearest – why does love bring woe?
When Iluvatar all the world remakes: Aragorn and I, shall both we see
You and mother then? I shall still hope on. Only Valar know what yet must be.

But the night draws on and the air is chill. Niphredil close up their flowery heads
As do elanor – though their sweet perfumes sweetly scent the air above our beds.
Mallorn leaves cover me as my warm blood chills. My heart slows. I doubt I will awake
To see morn's sunrise. Aragorn – I come! I shall come and join you for love's sake!
