re: The Christmas Pie Tin Mystery

T’was the night after Christmas, an throughout the kinhouse
Lay a long trail o’ pie tins, with crumbs scattered about

Mother Byrcha was fretting, had the pie vault been breached?
Was it a sneaky little hobbit, or a tall hungry thief?

She raced to the pie vault, found it open and bare
Every shelf barren, nothing was there

Who was this pie thief? She just had to know!
Was it Aedon, or Beorbrand or the cunning Sullo.

But the LMB members were all snug in their beds
No messy crumbs showing on their hands or on heads.

Mother Byrcha was anguished, she threw out the cat
And opened the book of demerits, while straightening her hat.

Demerits for everyone, for each and for all
Because they were sleeping and let the pies fall

Fall to the hands of some dark sneaky thief
Fallen and all gone, it made Byrcha weep.

But wait just a moment, what sound filled her ears?
T'was in the next room, could the thief still be near?

Grabbing a skillet, and wooden spoon just in case,
Byrcha put on her sneaky and crept through the place.

Past wrapping paper and ribbons and bows,
That burglar Byrcha was a good sneaker, you know!

She peeked round the corner, into the next room
But all she could see was light from the moon.

But, a chill in the air and the presence of wind
Made the kin leader leery as she slowly snuck in.

And indeed what she found, was amazing and rude
A large hole in the window where the thief had broke through.

More demerits for the sleeping, a tax for the repair bill
This ought not have happen, t’was a tough bitter pill.

She snuck through the window, pushed the rest of the glass out
Snuck round the shrubbery, around and about.

But all round the kinhouse, she spied nothing small
She spied nothing skinny, no she spied nothing tall.

But empty pie tins littered the yard all about
As if there’d been a pie party and she’d been left out.

Up past the fountain, she snuck round to the back
And with sudden surprise, she bumped into a sack

A sack that was solid, held way up high
But the creature that held it, was not in her sight

Reaching forth carefully, sure this was the thief
She probed the dark shadow, this bag holding sneak.

A deep pleasant voice, surprisingly nice
“That tickles,” it chuckled, once and then twice.

“I’m sorry, but thank you,” the voice said with a grin.
“You see I was famished and saw your pie tins”

“Such a marvelous repast, such lovely sweet treats
My poor empty tummy enjoyed all those eats.”

“But you aren’t supposed to see me, would be cheating you see”
“No one can see me, and it’s not Christmas eve.”

“But I’ve jotted a note down for extra blessings this year”
“To the Lonely Mountain Band, who filled Santa with cheer.”

“For the pumpkin and apple, cherry and key lime,”
“For the mincemeat and rhubarb, all were sublime.”

The shadow again chuckled, followed by a big burp.
Byrcha sighed and stopped stealthing before the dark girth.

“More pies can be made, though it will take a long time"
“To fill up the pie vault, but those pies weren’t all mine."

“All my dear kinmates, they pay their pie tax."
“Each morsel is treasured, each pie tin is maxed."

"Except poor dear Tearna, who’s a horrible cook,"
"We let her slip by with just writing books."

"And I think I shall task her to share this good tale"
"Of pie tins and Santa, and have a mug of good ale."

So, if you go sneaking on Christmas past eve
Look for dear Santa, hungry and in need

Open your larder, don’t be a grinch
Pies are for eating, it's really a cinch!

(and so I did! hehehe *hugs* )
